Let's get ready to rumble

Despite Drug Czar Gil Kerlipigski's claim to have ended the drug war - yes, he really did say it - the drug war continues unabated. And Obama is on track to oversee a record number of arrests. Yet leaders in drug policy reform continue to cozy up to politicians in an endlessly vain attempt to curry favor for our positions. But it is those same politicians that, just like Tuesday follows Monday, continue to support laws and policies that keep the drug business in the hands of criminal cartels and crazies. Fuck cozying up to these pricks.

Minority Report: the sequel

Remember "Minority Report," the so-so movie starring Tom Cruise? The premise was that "pre-cog" individuals could "see" crime before it happened, allowing the good guys to catch the bad guys before they actually became bad guys. Only in Hollywood, right? Wrong. It appears Obama's Justice Department believes such an idea (substituting computers and cops for the movie's creepy pre-cog freaks) can work in real life, turning on its head the conventional wisdom that art imitates life.

National Geographic on acid

Last week, as many of you may know, National Geographic aired a special titled "Inside LSD." As someone with a 40-year love affair tripping the light fantastic, I greatly anticipated what Nat/Geo had to say about LSD, one of the most misunderstood and maligned substances known to man - and enjoyed by over 20 million Americans. And what they did was very well done. My only complaint is that my friend, Nick Sand, was given less than 30 seconds of air time.

Chuck Grassley is an asshole

As many of you know, Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) has submitted a bill, The National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009. It calls for a top-to-bottom review of our criminal justice system, with special emphasis as it relates to drug policy. If it conforms with past blue-ribbon commissions, one recommendation will be to either decriminalize or outright legalize the use of marijuana. And, again if it conforms with the others, that recommendation will be ignored. (I'm old enough to remember Nixon's blue-ribbon commission recommended decriminalizing cannabis - and Nixon's refusal.

Careful with the ax, Eugene...

As many of you that know me and listen to The Opium Den, I'm no fan of medical marijuana being the proper strategy for moving the drug debate forward. In fact, it's no secret that I believe such a strategy could very well retard efforts to fully repeal all drug prohibitions. Of course I'm all for medical marijuana, and consider it a heartless government that denies its citizens a medicine of proven efficacy, like marijuana.
