Chuck Grassley is an asshole

As many of you know, Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) has submitted a bill, The National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009. It calls for a top-to-bottom review of our criminal justice system, with special emphasis as it relates to drug policy. If it conforms with past blue-ribbon commissions, one recommendation will be to either decriminalize or outright legalize the use of marijuana. And, again if it conforms with the others, that recommendation will be ignored. (I'm old enough to remember Nixon's blue-ribbon commission recommended decriminalizing cannabis - and Nixon's refusal. Ford had one, so did Carter - both found the same and both were ignored. So I'm not big on having faith in blue-ribbon commissions.)

That being said, Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa is an asshole for submitting an amendment to Webb's bill intended to neuter it. It says: "The commission shall have no authority to make findings related to current Federal, State and local criminal justice policies and practices or reform recommendations that involve, support or otherwise discuss the decriminalization of any offense under the Controlled Substances Act or the legalization of any controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act." Sounds like a big "fuck you" to Senator Webb, doesn't it? Sure does to me.

So "fuck you back" Senator Grassley. But thanks for bringing to the fore, once again, your incredible stupidity. President Obama should come to the aid of Sen. Webb, who was once on the short list for VP, and call-out Grassley. After all, Obama said he would call-out anyone that opposed sound policy. (Yes, he was talking about healthcare, but the point is the same.) But don't hold your breath. Obama is giving drug policy reform the same verbal blow job George W. gave the religious right. It's time to call-out Obama.
