Baby boomers, bongs, and green-thumb Grannies

I've been thinking a lot lately about the barely reported news story that a significant increase in the smoking of marijuana is expected by baby boomers once they retire. No longer subject to random drug tests from employers or fears of being found out by fellow employees (although they'd find more friends than foes), and with the kids long gone and on their own, Grandma and Grandpa are gonna smoke some dope. And they're not gonna tolerate being harassed by their government and, more to the point, the local cops.

Why all this should concern the Obama administration is simple: Grandma and Grampa vote. And since many of them believe some of their Social Security and Medicare benefits will be reduced going forward, it would make sense for Obama to let Grandma and Grampa get mellow before that shit hits the fan. That way, many of those disappointed will be able to say, "Well, we got fucked but at least Obama made pot cheap and legal." And cheap it will have to be. Because if the state tries to impose too high a tax on marijuana, all those retired baby boomers, especially the Grannies, will grow their own. And maybe a little for their friends - and their kids. Wouldn't that be a hoot. Because many of us boomers now get our pot from the (much) younger crowd, often a family member. To reverse that dynamic would make visiting the grandparents a whole new ballgame.
