Riding that train, high on cocaine...

Faithful readers will remember my recent piece on Red Bull's Simply Cola, the non-alcoholic drink banned last month in parts of Western Europe due to the finding of .4 milligrams of cocaine in every can. I compared that story to Coca-Cola's struggle with the FDA in 1906 over whether or not Coke contained cocaine (which it did). In any event, figuring Simply Coca will eventually be banned here in the U.S., I went out and ordered a case. So tonight, at the beginning of the broadcast, I'll pop the top of a 12-ounce can and buckle up. Given my past association with cocaine (well documented in the chapter on cocaine in my book, and, um, available for downloading at just 99 cents...), I don't expect to get much of a buzz. If I do, of course, I'll order another case or two.

While drinking my cocaine tonic tonight, I'll talk about the 2009 World Drug Report just issued by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Reading it reminded me of why I smoke pot (and with attribution to Willie Nelson): I smoke pot to keep the rest of the world sane. I'll do my best to report on this insane publication, but I must recommend that everyone read it - at least the Executive Summary (which, at best, is all anyone at the UN or inside the U.S. government will read).

And we'll have more Cops on Drugs, a regular feature inside The Opium Den revealing all the stupid drug tricks law enforcement folks do to end up in jail.

Stay healthy and high when it helps
